San Diego VOAD Meeting

The VOAD meeting was held at the American Red Cross Building in San Diego, CA. After introductions, Ryan DeHart of San Diego County OES spoke of the role of VOAD partners. He discussed the need for volunteer groups to attend VOAD meetings, for VOAD partners to provide registration and training within their groups of volunteers, and to connect volunteers to their area of interest. Emergency volunteer centers were discussed and identified, Primary location- County Staff and volunteers for staff (Rock Church, Point Loma). Houses of worship are often a safe outreach for communities.

The recent Ridgecrest earthquake was discussed and created a reassessment of the fault line(s) in San Diego. Evaluation of risk areas, damages and needs. Some organizations (Poway) actually creates simulated events following actual events for preparedness. Poway received a $24,000 grant for emergency techniques and programs. They have "Neighbors Helping Neighbors" and "Neighbors Evacuation Team" programs.

Air support in disaster was discussed by an attending pilot. DART- Disaster Airlift Support was identified as being available in disasters. (Approximate costs: $250 - $300/hr- citation vs other aircraft $4000/hour)
